This is only a very small sampling of classes that will be offered at the 2017 New Orleans Swing Dance Festival. We appreciate your patience as work to create the most amazing class schedule possible.

Intro to Lindy Hop

Make it up! Making up a song & a dance
In this class, we will work with a band on what we hope will be a yearly tradition of, as a big group, coming up with a dance routine AND a new song to go with it.

 

Digging In With The Rhythm Section

Rags & Drags

Description: A close dance good for the slowest of slow music and the fastest of fast music. Don’t be sweaty when you take this class. (Intermediate+ Active social dancers preferred. Connection and relaxation required. Forget it, Just come.)

Hearing The Melody

Just as each song is defined by its unique melody, each dance we have should be just as unique as the melody. This class will focus on being able to identify melodies and dance melodically and uniquely to each song bringing out the song’s and your own individuality.

 

The Dancers Role In The Band

Just like any given musician in the band, as dancers, we need to decide from moment to moment what our current role is. Are we playing the melody, accompanying the lead player, providing a rhythmical baseline, soloing, riffing, trading? Don’t just be another dancer, be a member of the band.

 

Surrender Squats

Al and Leon Shim Sham

Description: Just when you finally have your shim sham down we throw this wrench into it. Twice as hard and three times as fun. This is the shim sham as done by famous Lindy Hoppers Al Minns and Leon James at the savoy ballroom.

 

Jazz to House

Description: An exploration of the rhythmic and structural connections between vernacular jazz and House dance movement. In this class we’ll cover foundational and movement similarities between the two styles. Through movement across the floor, and in the jam circle/cypher we will experience these moves to their “traditional” music and an alternative track.
