Upon his return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Darryl started teaching dance workshops from his hometown.
Darryl Young, aka Dancingman504 is a New Orleans native, born in Charity Hospital and raised in the Ninth Ward. Young teaches 2nd Line Dance & Culture to local and International youth groups and adults, and performs 2nd Line Dance professionally with local bands. Young was living in Colorado when he saw the images of his beloved city under water. He realized that in hours, a storm could destroy a unique culture that had survived decades of struggle. He resolved to return to New Orleans and contribute his knowledge and experience to ensure the continuity of 2nd Line culture. Upon his return to New Orleans, he started teaching dance workshops from his own home.
Young has expanded his practice and currently maintains a dance studio in New Orleans Marigny area. He established his Heal2Toe Program in 2007 to show the kids that ‘there’s no place like home’; to help them find focus and self-esteem. The Heal2Toe dancers performed in French Quarter Fest 09, Satchmo Fest 09 & International Fall Fete 09. Young just returned from Banlieue Bleues Festival, Paris, France, where he led a Grand Parade and performed at four shows with The Soul Rebels Brass Band. He introduced his Heal2Toe Program to 300 French elementary school kids who were featured in the Grand Parade.
